Spark accelerates progress in emerging, high-impact climate fields.

A science-driven nonprofit, we are dedicated to identifying and mitigating sources of unmanaged climate risk.

By working directly with scientists, policy makers, and peer organizations, Spark supports the growth of emerging fields with the potential to limit warming, monitor and manage Earth systems risk, and help enable our return to a safe climate. Spark focuses on expanding the portfolio of mitigation and adaptation approaches that enable our return to a safe climate and minimize environmental and social risks along the way.

Our starting point: Near-term Warming

Our near-term warming trajectory risks impacting human system and environmental stability from increasing extreme weather events, exacerbating natural feedbacks, and triggering climate tipping elements.


We’re depending on sharp decreases in methane emissions, and other short-lived climate forcers, to slow our near-term warming trajectory. To start bending the temperature curve, we must cut all the short-lived climate forcer emissions, most notably methane, that we possibly can. At the same time, we must invest heavily in developing new solutions and improving our understanding of, and response to, rising natural methane emissions.

Livestock methane innovation


Methane emissions from enteric fermentation — "cow burps" — account for around 25% of global anthropogenic methane emissions. Without new solutions, enteric methane emissions alone are projected to exceed our entire anthropogenic methane budget. Major innovation is needed in parallel to changing agricultural practices to adopt existing solutions.

The need for atmospheric methane removal research

There's growing evidence that natural methane emissions are increasing as a result of climate change, creating a potentially dangerous warming feedback loop. The new research field of atmospheric methane removal is working to determine if methane can be safely and efficiently removed from the atmosphere at-scale so as to slow climate feedback loops.

Natural system responses & other areas of explorations

Methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide emissions from natural systems are rising as a result of climate change, and many are unaccounted for in current climate models or are not well understood. We must increase our understanding of natural system responses, tipping elements, and potential responses outside of reducing overall warming.

Spark is also exploring other short-lived climate pollutants to identify additional high-potential, but under-resourced climate solutions and responses, as well as exploring transformational changes to current nitrogen management in agriculture and industry to reduce nitrous oxide emissions, which is a very potent, long-lived greenhouse gas and stratospheric ozone depleting substance.
